An angel speaking to a soul near death

Death is an inevitable truth of life. It is a natural law decreed by Allah Almighty that everyone who enters this world must one day return to their Creator. As we near death, Islamic teachings describe the presence of five angels who deliver significant messages to the soul.

Let us reflect on the wisdom these angels impart and the lessons they teach us about life, death, and preparation for the Hereafter.

1. The First Angel's Message

When a person’s soul reaches their throat during the final moments of life, the First Angel appears and says:

“O son of Adam! Where is the strength of your powerful body today? How weak and fragile it has become! Where is your eloquent tongue? How silent it is today! Where are your family and loved ones? Why are you left alone now?”

This message is a reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of worldly attachments.

2. The Second Angel's Message

When the soul departs from the body, the Second Angel addresses the deceased:

“O son of Adam! What became of the wealth you hoarded out of fear of poverty? Where is the security you built to avoid destruction? Where are the provisions you gathered to escape loneliness? All of it has been left behind.”

This angel highlights the futility of material possessions, urging us to prioritize deeds over worldly assets.

3. The Third Angel's Message

As the funeral begins, the Third Angel speaks:

“O son of Adam! Today, you embark on a new and unfamiliar journey, one of great length and significance. You are entering a narrow and lonely place. If Allah Almighty is pleased with you, this is your happiness. But if He is displeased, this is your misfortune.”

This profound message emphasizes that success in this eternal journey depends on earning Allah’s pleasure through good deeds.

4. The Fourth Angel's Message

After the burial, as the deceased is laid in their grave, the Fourth Angel says:

“O son of Adam! Yesterday, you walked upon the earth, and today you lie beneath it. Yesterday, you laughed and rejoiced on its surface; today, you cry within it. Yesterday, you sinned openly on the earth; today, you are filled with regret and shame.”

This angel reminds us of accountability and repentance before our time runs out.

5. The Fifth Angel's Message

When the burial is complete and people return to their lives, the Fifth Angel speaks:

“O son of Adam! The people who buried you have departed. Even if they visit your grave, they cannot help you now. You collected wealth for others and left it behind. Today, your actions determine whether you are admitted into Allah’s mercy or a raging fire.”

This angel calls attention to the impermanence of human connections and the eternal impact of our deeds.

Reflection: A Reminder for Life

Dear readers, life is a temporary test, and our time on this earth is limited. Let us remember the lessons taught by the angels and make every moment count. By praying, performing good deeds, and seeking forgiveness, we can prepare for the eternal life to come.

“May Allah Almighty guide us, grant us the ability to live righteous lives, and make our journey to the Hereafter filled with peace and blessings. Ameen.”
